This article aims to clarify the functions of the "Complete" and "Lock" options for exams, explaining their differences and how they affect the information shown in the exam overview.

Complete Button
The "Complete" button is available only when the visit was initiated from a booked appointment in the WINK calendar. Selecting "Complete" allows you to generate an invoice in WINKpms using the procedures selected in the EMR billing section.
In an ideal workflow, the "Complete" button should be clicked before the patient leaves the exam room.
Lock Button
The "Lock" button is available only when the visit is still open (unlocked). "Locking" an exam has two main purposes:
- To secure the exam from further edits, preserving its finalized state.
- To update the overview by removing any empty or unconfirmed tiles, displaying only accurate and verified information.
Ideally, the "Lock" button should be clicked manually at the end of the day, once the clinician has finalized the patient chart.
IMPORTANT: Only the provider associated with an exam can unlock it. As such, other users will not see the lock icon at the top right of the "Amendments" section. Other users that want to add to this visit must add an amendment.
Locked exam:
View from a user that is not the provider of the exam:
- Orange (+) buttons are absent from all sections except for the Amendment section.
- Lock button is absent from the visit (this button is usually at the bottom of the visit's page).
- To add information, users must use Amendments.
View from a user that is the provider of the exam:
- Orange (+) buttons are absent from all sections except for the Amendments section.
- Lock button is absent from the visit (this button is usually at the bottom of the visit's page).
- A lock icon is visible at the top right corner of the Amendments section.
- To add information, users must use Amendments or open a tile and click the lock icon. Adding amendments is the preferred option to maintain integrity of the chart.
Unlocked exam:
- Orange (+) buttons are visible in each section if additional tests are available.
- All tiles (orange, red or green) are visible.
- Lock button is visible at the bottom of the visit's page.
- If they have sufficient permission, a user can add information to the visit.
Warning prompt
Since version 413 (released in October 2024), users receive a prompt warning if any red (unverified) tiles remain after clicking "Complete," "Lock," or "Referral." This warning indicates that some data may be unverified or potentially inaccurate, giving the optometrist an opportunity to review this information with the patient.
If the user proceeds with completing the exam or starting a referral letter without verifying the red tiles, these tiles will remain visible in the overview. However, upon locking the exam, red tiles will be hidden from the overview. This unverified information is not lost and remains accessible; the associated provider can view it if they unlock the exam later.
