Here is the procedure for installing and configuring your Datamax Label Printer with WINK.
Instruction Manuals: (click on links to download)
The Basics
- Turn on your computer, and go to the Windows desktop. You should have an active internet connection, but do not launch WINK. Furthermore, no other non-essential programs should be running either. Please note, WINK does not support Windows XP.
- Plug your Datamax printer into an electric socket, and turn it on.
- Using a Printer-USB cable, plug the datamax printer into one of your computer's USB 2.0 ports. (USB 3.0 ports are usuallly blue, red or yellow. They also usually have an "ss" written next to them.
- When you do this, a program should auto-install on your computer. You will see an icon showing this installation in the taskbar at the bottom of your desktop. If it didn't install, try unplugging it and plugging it in again. Alternatively, plug the printer into a different USB 2.0 port.
Load a ribbon in your datamax printer
- Watch this video
- Set the media sensor to "-10"
- If the ribbon is too tight, it will rip as it prints labels. Click here for instructions on adjusting the ribbon tension. (Set it to "1/2")
Load a roll of labels and calibrate the printer:
- Watch this video
- Set both media sensors to "-10"

Configure the printer with WINK on your pc
- Right click on the WINK icon on your computers desktop, and select "Run as Administrator".
- Allow the software to launch >> login
- Click on Settings >> Datamax Label Printer >> Change Printer Name
- Name your printer as follows: "Frame Labels" or "Patient Labels" or "All labels" as required >> click OK.
- At the bottom right of the main page, you will see 4 tiny icons with 4 red boxes around them. Click once on the Datamax printer icon. (Before doing so, you may hover your mouse over each icon to see what each represents)
- You may be asked if the datamax is physically connected to this computer. Click on "yes".
- You will likely also be asked to click OK 4 times to install 4 different programs on your PC. If the messages asking you to do so don't pop-up, then click on the flashing icon in your taskbar. If they never pop up or flash, then click on the Datamax icon again.
- A service will now automatically install on your PC. The service name is "WINK". To ensure it has properly installed, you can click on Ctrl+Alt+Delete >> Task Manager >> Services >> look for "WINK". If you see it there, then you are good to go! (Don't interrupt the installation process. Wait for installation to be completed before checking).
- WINK will also proceed to "wrap" the Datamax printer. This process could take a minute to complete. When completed successfully, the red box around the datamax printer icon at the bottom right of the window, should become white.
- Hover your mouse over the datamax icon again. It should now say "WINK connected to Datamax ..." If it doesn't say this, then repeat step 5.
- Try to print a frame label (click on reprint barcodes) or a patient label (open a patient file).
If this was successful, then in the future you do not need to run WINK as an administrator anymore. It is only required this one time for this installation.
The next step is to connect the other computers in your office to this printer. If you intend on doing so, then we recommend closing WINK on this first PC and waiting 5 minutes before launching it again on this first PC. This is to ensure that you are connecting via the network and not the USB connection. It could only take a few seconds for your computer to make the switch, but to be on the safe side, we recommend waiting 5 minutes.
Configure all the other PC's to print via the Datamax printer
- Make sure the computer to which the datamax printer is connected is ON!!!
- Make sure you can print labels via that computer.
- Launch WINK on the other computers (you do not need to launch in admin mode)
- Once at the main page, wait another 10 seconds for WINK to try to connect to the datamx printer automatically.
- If the Datamax printer icon is red, click on it once. This launches the "sniffer". Like a dog who is smelling to find something, WINK will sniff your network to find the datamax printer.
- If the Datamax printer icon is white, do a test a print.
If the light on your printer is red
- Your printer is not calibrated. You may need to re-calibrate it. You may need to turn off and restart the printer. You may need to replace the ribbon. You may need to replace the roll of labels. Your printing will fail until the printer light is a solid green.
If the light on your printer is green, but you are getting an error message when trying to print:
- Try to print at least twice. If it still doesn't work after two attempts, then:
- Confirm that the computer to which the printer is connected, is on.
- Confirm that the printer is also on.
- Confirm that your printer and PC are physically connected via USB (do not change the usb port unless you understand what that will do).
- Click once on the WINK Datamax Sniffer on your computer
- Hover your mouse over the printer icon to see if your computer is now connected or not. If it is, do a test print.
- If it isn't do a test print from the main computer which is physically connected to the datamax printer. If it doesn't work, sniff the network via that PC and try again.
If you unplug and replug the datamax printer from one USB port to the next, then you will likely have to re-sniff the network on each PC.
